Castle's of Scotland 1Eilean Donan Castle sits at the point where three Scottish Lochs Meet, Loch Long, Loch Alsh and Loch Duich. The most photographed castle in the world? Most definately. Certainly Eilean Donan is Scotland's most recognisable castle, Set in a superbly beautiful and romantic setting.Although the island of Eilean Donan has been a fortified site for at least 800 years, the present building largely dates back to the early 20th century, which rose from the ruins of its predecessor. In 1539, a feud between the Mackenzies and the Mcleods of Dunvegan, over the title " Lord of the Isles ", came to a head when the castle was attacked and bombed to the ground by 50 Galleys.Again in 1715, the castle came under fire. This time Goverment troops were overcome by the Jacobites. Finally, some four years later, in retaliation, the castle was attacted by Govermment warships and left abandoned in ruins. After the bombardment, Eilean Donan lay in ruin for some 200 years. It was finally restored between 1912 - 1932.20 Years of restoration work was faithfully designed to its original plan Eilean Donan Castle Threave Castle, Built on Threave island on the River Dee near Kirkcubright & close to the English borders.A 10 minuate walk through fields & woods take you to the shore side. There you will find a small jetty and a brass bell with a rope pull. Bulit around 1450 by Sir Colin Campbell. The Castle was used as a Government garrison during the 1715 and 1745 Jacobite RebellionsThe Castle was abandoned completely at the end of the 18th Century and then had the misfortune to be burnt out after a "lightning strike" Kilchurn Castle. Castle Stalker is located 25 miles north of Oban on the west coast of Scotland. Built around 1540, this much-photographed castle was for use as a hunting lodge. In fact, its Gaelic name Caisteal Stalcair translates literally as 'Castle of the Hunter'.The castle, like so many in Scotland, has had a turbulent history. One 17th century Stewart gambled it away to a Campbell for an eight-oared galley. During the 1745 Jacobite Rising it was used as a garrison for troops. Castle Stalker.
